Whenever I hear the phrase “head to head” I’m whisked away to a simpler time. A time when snotty kid faces were crammed into a rectangular box; feverishly smacking buttons like jackrabbits on meth. Beep, boop, peowshh sounds the only real indicator as to who was winning. In other words, everything seen in this commercial. Why? Because I’m a vintage antique gamer (circa 1976), and head to head style gaming is sort of a rarity nowadays. Which makes Galaxy Combat Wargames such an interesting upcoming prospect.  You could almost shoe it into a Coleco double mini-arcade box and it would be right at home in any era of gaming.

Galaxy Combat Wargames is about outsmarting your opponent on a limited playing field, and equal number of objectives. Blowing up your opponent’s spacecraft is one way to win, another is to destroy their headquarters. All of this is easier said than done thanks to the numerous obstacles between you and your opponent. Shield walls, drones, and incoming missile fire will thwart your efforts. Do you spend time trying to take down his shield generator? It could make it easier to land more shots but also leave your headquarters exposed on the far end. What if you focus on his headquarters and hide behind your drones? Well, your opponent just may have an easier time locking on his missiles while you sit stationary firing on the HQ. These conundrums are tackled on the fly, but offer much potential for quick multiplayer arcade experiences versus other players.

In addition to online multiplayer, players will be able to train against AI opponents. As well as use post-mission rewards to upgrade weapons, secondary weapons, and more for more efficient attacks. This upcoming indie title is on Steam’s Greenlight program, needing votes and support from game fans. I’m sure there are still some of you out there still playing Spacewar!well you can finally pause it and check out it’s great great grandchild: Galaxy Combat Wargames.
