The indie gaming scene could easily be compared to the Gold Rush era of old. So many developers, thousands and thousands of games, sifting through them all to arrive at the gold nugget or gem isn’t easy. That’s what the indie game landscape has become in the last few years. Not saying that most indie games are the equivalent of dirt (well, one game for sure is), but there is an abundance of games in most genres. In a sea of “OK” and “average,” sifting through to the promising gems takes patience, dedication, and time; that’s why we’re here. Producing outlandish and unique gems might be why Blacksea Odyssey is here. Pretty lofty praise for a developer who has yet to release their first game, right? Blacksea Odyssey caught our eye months ago. It wasn’t the screenshots, press information, or a nifty trailer that did us in; it was their Twitch.TV channel that caught our attention. Their channel is not so much about viewing gameplay , but of the actual game development, LIVE. Openly fielding questions, and talking about how they are building assets for their game was intriguing. Most importantly, from what we have seen of this game so far, the intrigue and anticipation is merited.
Blacksea Odyssey is a top down shooter with several creative ideas mixed in. Did I mention you are a fisherman in space? Signed up already? Well, it gets better. You are a space fisherman involved in a massive tournament to hunt giant space creatures. You have a nice fancy space jetski, a customizable gun, and what looks to be a sure fire hit- a giant harpoon. Now your gun can be altered by finding runes, these runes when arranged in different orders or combined with other runes yields different results. It could change your unidirectional beam of energy into a 8 way explosive streaking rocket attack. Making exploring and finding more runes a must for crafting the right type of weapon that fits your playstyle(s). That’s just on the periphery the real climactic moments deals with taking down immense bosses that can be up to 5 screens in size. With these bosses your pew pew cannon isn’t going to cut it on it’s own. For that you need to get your Captain Ahab on.
With the harpoon you can pierce and remove limbs, body armor, sections of body, whatever it takes to defeat your soon-to-be-mounted-on-a-big-wall enemy. This physics/location based harpoon combat adds a layer of strategy to your epic takedowns. Not interesting enough you say laddie? This game is also a rogue-like game, with procedurally generated areas to prevent monotony and permadeath. This is not for the faint of heart.
All these ideas put together, and watching these guys work on their game live, has made this is a game we can’t wait to get our hands on. Luckily, the wait will be over Spring 2016. Can’t wait that long ye say me SeaSpace Dog? Sign up for the upcoming ALPHA today. Blacksea Odyssey has announced a release window, as well as partnering with publisher Mastertronic for a full scale release on Steam and other platforms.
